Strategy Two in Kenosha Unified
School District's Strategic Plan states, “We will develop a collaborative
system, which actively engages students in meaningful service to their school
and community.”
The District recognizes both community service and service-learning as important
forms of service.

Definitions of Community Service and Service Learning
Community service is
defined as voluntary, unpaid service that addresses a genuine need in the
school, local, or global community.
There is no intentional tie to formal, academic learning; the emphasis
is strictly on the service.
Service-learning is defined
as a teaching tool by which students use what they are learning in
class to perform service that meets a genuine need in their school, local or
global community. The service-learning activities strengthen
students’ understanding of their academic studies, provide opportunities for
additional formal learning, and foster a sense of responsibility and active
citizenship.

KUSD Service Learning Handbook
The handbook includes an
introduction to service-learning, tools to help in planning service projects,
and links to other resources. It also
includes information on funding and publicizing service projects, and features
a database of community organizations and contacts who could potentially be
partners in community service or service-learning efforts.

Service Coaches
Currently, each school building
has a Service Coach, a staff member who acts as a liaison to the central
service learning office, and advises fellow staff on service projects upon
request.
Pilot Schools
Seven schools in the District are
serving as pilot schools in the 2006-2007 school year. A team of educators from each
building underwent training in summer 2006, and will implement service-learning
projects at some point in the 2006-2007 year.
