Artificial Intelligence Policy
At eSchool we understand that Generative AI tools are becoming increasingly prevalent in education and various occupations. These tools have the potential to enhance learning and creativity but must be used responsibly to maintain academic integrity, protect student information, and promote ethical use. Unless otherwise stated in the class welcome folder and/or for an individual assignment, the use of Generative AI is prohibited. The use of Generative AI will never be a requirement for an assignment at eSchool. However, there may be instances where a teacher does allow students to use AI on assignment(s).
In instances where students are allowed to use AI, they should consider the following guidelines:
-
-
- Academic Integrity
- Original Work: Students may never copy and paste work from AI and submit it as their original work. AI tools should support learning and idea generation, not replace original thinking and effort.
- Acknowledgment/Reference: When AI tools significantly contribute to an assignment, students must provide proper acknowledgment. For instance:
- “This section was generated with the help of [AI Tool Name].”(your instructor may have more specific guidelines for citation depending on the assignment).
- Protecting Student Information
- Data Privacy: Students should avoid sharing personal or sensitive information when using Generative AI tools. Students must not input identifiable information about themselves or others into AI systems.
- Academic Integrity
-
-
- Addressing Potential Bias/Misinformation
- Awareness and evaluation: Students should be aware that AI tools often generate biased or incorrect information and should evaluate this information for accuracy and bias.
- Diverse Sources: Students must use multiple sources to cross-check AI outputs’ accuracy and avoid over-reliance on AI.
- Responsibility: Students are responsible for the accuracy of the information they submit.
- Addressing Potential Bias/Misinformation
-
-
- Age Restriction
- Supervised Use: Students under the age of 13 may only use generative AI tools under the supervision of a teacher or guardian.
- Age Restriction
- Consequences for Misuse
- Any misuse of Generative AI tools (including plagiarism, unethical use, or violation of privacy guidelines) will be subject to disciplinary action per the eSchool academic integrity policy. If the authenticity of a submission is in question, a teacher may require an alternate assessment to validate comprehension. This may include (but is not limited to) in-person assessment, written assessment, discussion-based assessment, etc. In instances where parents/guardians and students disagree with a teacher’s conclusion of the use of AI, the eSchool Principal will make the final determination (per eSchool policy).
